Finding Refuge: The Hidden Power of a Safe Space

Introducing the Safe Space Trauma-Processing Tool

Nestled in the dimly lit corner of my childhood bedroom closet, a small, tattered teddy bear beckoned to me like a silent friend. As a seven-year-old, I sought solace in this hidden spot, a sanctuary from the world's overwhelming chaos. Tears streaming down my face one evening, I fled to this familiar hiding place, seeking comfort and protection from my stepfather's angry shouts.

Little did I realize then that this safe haven would become a lifeline through life's storms, guiding me even into adulthood. During moments of turmoil, like arguments with my partner triggering old wounds, I instinctively turned inward to find refuge in my inner safe space. Visualizing that familiar nook, I cocooned myself in safety and calm, reassuring my inner child of love and security.

Over the years, my Safe Space evolved, from secret spots in closets with my teddy to the shade of an old crabapple tree and my beagle puppy, offering peace away from school bullies and stressed and abusive caregivers.

My journey toward a trauma-informed life began without a clear starting point, much like hiking the Appalachian Trail. Yet, my love for trees foreshadowed the emergence of a giant mental oak tree as my Safe Space.

To many, a Safe Space holds varied meanings, from refuge from bullies for LGBTQ+ youth to an inner sanctuary against emotional turmoil. Trauma-focused therapists use techniques like associating safe spaces with pressure points, enabling rapid access during triggering situations, restoring calm physiologically.

As my inner world expanded and my trauma-healing journey advanced, my respite became a treehouse retreat, a cozy haven for reconnection and recharge. Today, my Safe Space, symbolized by a treehouse on a giant turtle's back, represents the resilience cultivated within. Through transformations, it remains a refuge for my inner child, nurturing emotions and resilience to navigate life's challenges.

A Safe Space offers clarity amidst chaos, reminding us of inner strength and the power to navigate difficult emotions. Its beauty lies in simplicity, a pause, a breath, and connection with oneself.
